The big picture:
The Israeli regime targeted one of the buildings of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Tehran on Monday, June 16.
The attack, involving at least four bombs, struck the central building housing IRIB’s news department, while a live news broadcast was underway.
Peyman Jebeli, head of Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, praised Iranian TV’s role during Israel’s 12-day war, saying journalists “never retreated” from covering the public’s resistance and victory. He emphasized that IRIB and other outlets will continue this path to show solidarity with the people.
What he’s saying:
“The war proved that our media stood bravely and believed in their cause,” Jebeli said. He called IRIB a symbol of Iranian media and praised the collective responsibility shown by domestic outlets during wartime.
He added that visits by ambassadors and journalists to IRIB’s damaged headquarters revealed the “crimes of the Zionist regime” and the resilience of the Iranian people. “Even those who didn’t want to see the truth were confronted with it,” he said. “Reality never stays hidden—just like what happened in Gaza.”
Go deeper:
At the time of the attack, news anchor Sahar Emami was presenting the news. Despite the building trembling under the first strike, she continued the broadcast.
“Allah-o Akbar” (God is Great), she proclaimed, drawing global attention to the heinous war crime committed by the Zionist regime against Iran’s national broadcaster.
Moments later, another blast filled the studio with smoke and dust, forcing her to evacuate. She returned shortly after to join another TV anchor Abedini and share her harrowing experience.
