Iraqi figures slam Saudi media insult to Marja

The rude insult of a Saudi media outlet to the prominent Iraqi Shia cleric provoked an angry reaction from Iraqi figures.

Iran Press/Middle East: The Saudi daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat on Friday published an insulting cartoon of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, which provoked widespread reactions in Iraq.

The head of the Iraqi al-Fatah parliamentary coalition Hadi al-Amiri said the Saudi regime has once again crossed the red lines and tread on the high values of the Iraqi people.

Condemning the move, Ahmed al-Asadi, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, said the action against the religious authorities is an ideology still ruling Saudi Arabia.

Nasr al-Shammari, a spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Resistance Movement al-Nujaba, also said on Twitter that the anti-Shia positions of the Saudi ruling family and the other US and Israeli mercenaries were not a new phenomenon.

"The Saudis are the ones who have wrongfully shed the Muslims' blood," he said.

In another development on May 15, the Iraqi Parliament's Communications and Information Commission called for the closure of the Saudi MBC TV Channel after insulting the Deputy Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Unit (PMU) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
