Lebanon records first novel Coronavirus death: Health Ministry

A Lebanese man died Tuesday from the novel coronavirus, a health ministry official said, marking the country's first recorded death from an epidemic that has infected 52 people nationwide.

Iran Press/Middle East: The government has halted flights for non-residents from epicenters of the virus, shut schools and warned against public gatherings as the total number of cases rose to 52 this week.

A health ministry official said the man who died was 56 and had suffered from a chronic illness. The patient had been in quarantine in a Beirut state hospital.

Health Minister Hassan Hamad has warned the virus was spreading and asked Lebanese to take precautions without panicking.

Lebanon's crippling financial crisis could pose a threat to managing its relatively limited coronavirus outbreak that has been kept in check but is expected to spread, health officials say.

Lebanon, already hit by economic collapse and anti-government protests, is now grappling with an outbreak of the deadly illness -- its latest in a long list of crises.

Authorities on Tuesday said they had recorded 11 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Lebanon's Shiite Muslim authorities have suspended the Friday weekly prayers and all other gatherings in mosques until further notice.

Lebanon has said it would deny entry to non-resident foreigners arriving from China, South Korea, and Italy, which are among the hardest hit by the epidemic.

But the domestic concern is still high amid fears that Lebanon is not equipped to face a mass outbreak.

With a grinding liquidity crunch and dwindling foreign reserves, Lebanon has struggled to secure the dollars needed for medical imports even before the novel coronavirus arrived.

The novel coronavirus has infected more than 115,800 people -- including at least 1,000 in the US -- and killed over 4,200 worldwide.
