MUSCAT (IP) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation have arrived in the Omani capital for the third round of Iran-U.S. negotiations, taking place under the mediation of Oman’s Foreign Ministry, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.

Why it matters:

The resumption of indirect talks with Washington comes as Tehran pushes for the removal of “illegal and inhumane” sanctions. Iran’s stance remains focused on defending its right to peaceful nuclear energy while offering reassurances about the nature of its nuclear program.

What he’s saying:

Esmail Baghaei posted on X that Iran is:

“Committed to protecting the Iranian nation’s legal and legitimate rights to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.”

“Prepared to take reasonable steps to provide assurances about the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program.”

“Prioritizing the immediate and tangible lifting of illegal and inhumane sanctions.”

“Waiting to see whether the other side has the seriousness and readiness needed for a fair and realistic agreement.”

The big picture:

This round of talks follows two earlier sessions: the first in Muscat on April 12 and the second held indirectly in Rome on April 19. With tensions still simmering over nuclear issues and regional conflicts, the Muscat round is a test of diplomatic will on both sides.

Go deeper:

The outcome of the Muscat talks may determine whether momentum builds toward a broader deal—or collapses under mutual mistrust.
