Iran Press/ Iran News: Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia have been locked in a decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994.
During a six-week war in 2020 that killed more than 6,600 people, Azerbaijan reclaimed large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas that had been controlled for decades by the Armenia-backed separatists.
In a statement, Armenia’s defense ministry said Azerbaijan launched “intensive shelling” against Armenian military positions in the direction of the cities of Goris, Sok, and Jermuk at 00:05 am (20:05 GMT) on Tuesday. Azerbaijani troops used drones and “artillery and large-calibre firearms,” it said.
This is while Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced an hour ago that 49 Armenian soldiers were killed during the clashes on Monday evening.
The Spokesman of the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed concern about the escalation of the tensions in the border area between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan and stressed the peaceful settlement of the problem through international law.

Nasser Kanaani said the Islamic Republic of Iran was carefully monitoring the developments and called on the two countries to observe each other's territorial integrity. Kanaani said that Iran was ready to offer any assistance to settle the dispute between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Kannani also emphasized the inadmissibility of any changes in the borders of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
