Tehran (IP) - The Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) stated that France built its entire nuclear industry through a loan it took from Iran.

Iran PressIran News: Mohammad Eslami said in a televised interview on Sunday that the very France that improvised the most obstacles in the way of Iran's nuclear industry, built its entire nuclear industry through a loan it took from Iran.

He said that France was supplying 76 percent of its power through its nuclear industry which was established thanks to Iranian money.

Eslami recalled that Karun nuclear power plant was started by France before the Islamic Revolution and Iran had shares stocks in the French nuclear industry.

He noted that France neither gave back the loan nor it did anything for the progress of the Iranian nuclear industry.

The Karoon Nuclear Power Plant (also known as Esteghlal Nuclear Power Plant or Darkhovin) is a planned nuclear power plant located in Khuzestan province, Iran about 70 kilometers south of Ahvaz at the Karoon River.

Before the Islamic Revolution, Iran had signed a $2 billion contract with French company Framatome to build two 910 MW pressurized water reactors, at Darkhovin. After the Revolution, France withdrew from the project, and the engineering components of the plant were withheld in France.

The construction of the power station was also halted during the 8-year imposed war of Iraq on Iran.

In 1992, Iran signed an agreement with China to build two 300 MW reactors at the site, which were to be completed within ten years, but later on, China withdrew from the project under the United States pressure.

The project was subsequently taken up by Iran itself, as no other country was ready to cooperate in its construction.
