Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi

Tehran (IP) - Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman had a backlash to the US' allegations of Tehran's involvement in the Iraqi protests outside its embassy in Baghdad, saying that America has the surprising audacity of attributing to Iran the protests of the Iraqi people against Washington’s crimes in Iraq.

Iran PressIran News: In a statement on Tuesday night, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi responded to the US officials' accusations about the developments in Iraq, saying: "America has the surprising audacity of attributing to Iran the protests of the Iraqi people against Washington’s savage killing of at least 25 and injuring lots of Iraqis, inflicting damages to their country and violating its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

He was referring to the attack by the US forces against Kata'ib Hezbollah bases, which is part of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), on Sunday night.

After demonstrations of Iraqi people in front of the US embassy in Baghdad, US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran was “orchestrating” an attack on the mission.

Mousavi described the US claim as an insult to the Iraqi people, adding: "How and on what basis do you expect the Iraqi people to remain silent against all these crimes?!"

"On one hand, the Americans have ignored the Iraqi nation’s independence and freedom, and on the other hand, they have forgotten their role in supporting the dictator Saddam, creating the ISIS and killing the Iraqi people afterward.” said Mousavi adding that the US is still considered "occupier" by the Iraqi people.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman denied the US officials’ claims against Tehran, warning them against any miscalculation or unreasonable reaction and called on the White House to reconsider its destructive policies in the region.

Iraqi demonstrators have entered the US embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday.

Gathering in front of the US embassy in Baghdad, Iraqi protesters chanted 'Death to America' slogan.
