Iran Press/ Middle East: In 2012, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Syria and closed its consular office in Damascus.
According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia plans to invite Syrian President, Bashar Assad, to participate in the meeting of the heads of Arab countries, which will be held in Riyadh on May 19, after more than a decade of breaking diplomatic relations with Syria.
Reuters wrote in its report: "Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan will travel to Damascus in coming weeks to hand Assad a formal invitation to attend the summit scheduled for May 19, two of the sources said."
At the end of last month (March), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia confirmed the beginning of negotiations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Syria to resume the provision of consular services.
Many Arab countries have recently called for the return of Syria to the Arab League; Damascus' membership in this organization was suspended in 2011 as a result of the Syrian crisis and the civil war at that time.
