Geneva (IP) - The Iranian Foreign Minister says the UN Human Rights Council has turned into a political tool for the Western powers.

Iran PressEurope: Iran's FM Hossein Amir-Abdollahian delivered a speech on Monday at the 52nd meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Swiss.

Amir-Abdollahian criticized the European countries following the US unilateralism and stressed that the countries were not morally competent to talk about human rights in Iran.

Amir-Abdollahian pointed out: "It is sheer hypocrisy to defend the human rights of the Iranian people and at the same time deprive them of their basic rights of health, education, and life."

He referred to the recent unrest in Iran and recalled that the gathering from the very beginning was a peaceful one but it turned into a riot due to the smear campaign of a number of foreign-backed media and terrorist elements.

Unrest and brawls were instigated under the pretext of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died due to a sudden heart attack in a police center in Tehran on Tuesday, September 13, after being taken there for violation of dress codes along with some other women.

A number of Persian language TV channels based in the US and UK promoted violence and terror in Iran in their alleged news programs, he told the audience present in the meeting.

Still, the Iranian foreign minister touched on the growth of extremist and terrorist groups throughout the world as one of the most important challenges of the current era and reminded the audience of some of them:

"The desecration of the Holy Quran in some of the Western countries and the Shiraz terrorist attack in Iran which claimed the lives of 13 people, including innocent women and children, are a few examples of the case."

Unrest and brawls were instigated under the pretext of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died due to a sudden heart attack in a police center in Tehran on Tuesday, September 13, after being taken there for violation of dress codes along with some other women.

Still, stressing the sacrifices of Lt. Gen. Qasem Soleimani that were etched indelibly on the minds of the region's people, he said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran will spare no efforts to bring to justice the elements involved in the assassination of General Soleimani.

General Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) deputy head Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were assassinated along with their companions in a US drone strike authorized by former President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

They were highly popular because of their key role in eliminating the US-backed ISIS terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

Iran's Foreign Minister called for the stop of the Israeli regime's systematic violation of the Palestinian nation's rights and reiterated that as long as the regime occupied Palestine and commit crimes against the country's people, it was difficult to believe in the UN's human rights mechanisms.
