The death toll from powerful earthquakes that devastated areas of Turkey and Syria has topped 41,000, according to figures collated by authorities in the two countries and other sources, as the United Nations began transporting relief materials through a new border crossing to Syria.

Iran PressAsia: Turkish authorities say 35,418 people have been killed in the country. The Syrian government and the UN said more than 5,800 people dead in Syria.

Aid has begun trickling into northwestern Syria, nine days after the quakes, with a UN convoy carrying humanitarian assistance passing through the Bab al-Salam crossing from Turkey.

Aid is slowly trickling into northwestern Syria and residents say the supplies are too little, too late.

Round-the-clock efforts of Iranian rescue teams in Türkiye

The World Health Organization is describing the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria as the worst natural disaster in a century in what it characterizes as its Europe region.

Excavators have begun clearing the rubble in Türkiye’s Kahramanmaras as rescuers wrap up search efforts in the hard-hit city.

People in the city, which is close to the epicenter of last week’s earthquakes, are still in a state of shock and disbelief.

In Türkiye alone, an estimated 1 million people are living in tents and temporary shelters, while at least 80,000 people have been hospitalized.

Up to 5 million people may be homeless in Syria, many already internally displaced after fleeing civil war.
