Tehran (IP) - Iran's President said that the US' tendency to get close to Venezuela was not out of friendship and altruism but out of their need for energy.

Iran PressIran news: While receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of Venezuela, Jose Rafael Silva Aponte, on Sunday, Ebrahim Raisi stated: "Today's desire of the Americans to be close to Venezuela is not due to friendship, but due to the country's need for energy resources."

Raisi called the relations between Iran and Venezuela close and friendly, and said: "During Mr Maduro's visit to Tehran, we had constructive discussions that led to fruitful agreements for the expansion of relations between the two countries".

He stated that the implementation of the agreements could operationalize the diverse capacities of the two countries for shoring up the fields of cooperation.

Raisi highlighted the independence-seeking spirit of the Venezuelan people and noted that it was the very spirit that made them a privileged nation in the region.

Jose Rafael Silva Aponte, for his part, said: "The Venezuelan nation and government are grateful for the support of the government and people of Iran, and during my mission, I will do my best to expand and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries."
