Lebanon (IP) - Sheikh Maher Hammoud, the Secretary General of the Resistance Scholars Union, slammed the Pope's visit to Bahrain with Sheikh Al-Azhar to announce a world peace document as an ugly and indecent act.

Iran PressMiddle East: The interfaith dialogue meeting in Bahrain is scheduled to be held in November with the presence of some of the world's religious leaders, including Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, and Sheikh Al-Azhar of Egypt. The spread of this news caused the political currents inside Bahrain to react negatively to this trip.

According to the Iran Press news agency, the reason for the protest of the internal political currents of Bahrain is the prevailing political suffocation in this country and the imprisonment of most of the leaders who oppose Al Khalifa's rule. Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society of Bahrain, whose secretary-general, Sheikh Ali Salman, is still in prison, issued a statement addressed to the Pope and asked him to raise the issue of human rights in Bahrain during his visit to Manama.

In the continuation of the protests regarding the holding of this meeting in Bahrain, Sheikh Maher Hammoud, one of the prominent Sunni scholars in Lebanon and the Secretary General of the Resistance Scholars Union, in his Friday prayer sermons this week, stated that "For us, Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayeb Sheikh Al-Azhar is respected for his knowledge, morals and behavior."

He further added: "We believe that the Pope himself takes far better positions than the local churches in relation to national issues, and he has also taken several measures that are worthy of praise and respect, but the Pope going to Bahrain with Sheikh Al-Azhar to announce a world peace document is an ugly thing. And it is disgusting."

Sheikh Maher Hammoud also stated: "The Kingdom of Bahrain has involved itself in the ugly act of normalizing [relations with the Israeli regime], which contradicts the most basic human principles; Moreover, he is also involved in oppressing half of the people of Bahrain due to religious ethics."
