The European Union may face recession in the wake of record-high gas prices, as the coming winter is likely to be "one of the worst in history," EU Commissioner for Economy said in an interview with Der Spiegel on Thursday.

Iran PressEurope: Following the start of the war in Ukraine, European countries imposed extensive sanctions against Russia's energy sector under the pretext of supporting this country. Currently, these sanctions have plagued Europe and it is dealing with an unprecedented energy crisis.

EU Economic Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said in an interview with SPIEGEL on Thursday that the European Union may face an economic recession following the unprecedented increase in gasoline prices, because the coming winter will probably be "one of the worst winters in history." 

 

Gentiloni added: "The current inflation is wreaking havoc on our economy, and this winter could be one of the worst winters in history."

"The consequences of the decrease in Russian gas exports to Europe have increased costs, especially in the energy sector of the Green Continent, and the countries that depended on Russian resources more than others have suffered the most from the decrease in gas exports of this country." Paolo emphasized. 

We are experiencing unprecedented uncertainty, but the figures for the entire EU economy are still positive." The EU economic commissioner said about the possibility of gas rationing in some EU countries: "It depends on the decisions of Vladimir Putin. the president of Russia, and how we should behave ourselves.

He also pointed out that "at the moment, energy conservation is essential, although we're seeing good progress in how gas storage facilities are filling up and saving energy."
