Eight workers were injured Friday in a refinery explosion in a town in Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador, said the police.

Iran PressAmerica: All the eight workers, some with serious injuries, were sent to hospital, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a news release published Friday.

"The cause of the explosion remains under investigation," said the news release.

Multiple media reports citing witnesses said the explosion took place shortly after 4:00 p.m. local time (1830 GMT) at the refinery based in the town of Come By Chance.

Braya Renewable Fuels, the company operating the refinery, confirmed the explosion in a statement and said the situation has been contained.
