Iran Press/ Asia: A powerful earthquake struck a rural, mountainous region of southeastern Afghanistan early on Wednesday, killing at least 920 people and injuring 600 others in the deadliest quake in two decades, authorities said.
The Taliban government has called on the international community and charities to work to help those affected by the earthquake in southeastern Afghanistan.
Local sources in Paktika province of Afghanistan announced a 6-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday morning in Gyan city of this province left thousands dead and injured.
The quake also shook some other provinces in Afghanistan, and local sources in the city of Gyan Paktika say a village was completely destroyed in the quake.
Mohammad Hassan Nami, the head of the Crisis Management Organization of Iran, referring to the earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, said: "According to the order of the Minister of Interior, the country's crisis management teams are on full alert and if necessary, teams will be sent to Afghanistan.
Nami added: "Humanitarian cooperation in times of crisis and natural disasters will be a bilateral issue, and the Islamic Republic of Iran declares its readiness to provide assistance to other affected countries."
The head of Iran's Crisis Management Organization noted: "Crisis management teams are ready to go to Afghanistan's friendly and neighboring country with all facilities."
In a tweet, the Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquake in Afghanistan.
In response to the earthquake near the city of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday morning, Amir-Abdollahian expressed his condolences and stated: "As neighbors and brothers, we stand by the honorable and patient people of Afghanistan in these difficult times."
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that the aid shipment of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be delivered to Afghanistan immediately.
