Commentary:

New York (IP) - The UN Special Rapporteur on the Negative Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights called the US sanctions on Iran a violation of human rights.

Iran PressCommentary: Speaking in a press conference on May 18, Alena Douhan, who had a 12-day trip to Iran, recommended the US to stop its sanctions on the Iranian nation in terms of medicine and food.

Stating that sanctions against Iran were considered unjustifiable by the Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly, Douhan added that the US sanctions jeopardized the human rights in Iran and reduced the government's revenue, which led to the increase in prices and made people and refugees vulnerable.

Iran condemns US sanctions as threat to nation’s right to health

After the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1977, Iran was targeted by various types of sanctions on different areas, including banking, oil and foreign trade. Yet, the US secondary sanctions directly hit the Iranian nations, depriving them of medicines for their patients and right to life.

The findings of Matthias Neuenkirch and Dr. Florian Neumeier's studies on the impact of sanction on different countries show that the sanctions have caused income inequality, poverty, and low GDP growth in the target countries. For instance, the US sanctions increased poverty in the target countries by about 3.5% from 1991 to 2018 and lowered the per capita GDP growth rate by over 2%.

As with Iran, the unilateral sanctions of the US have impacted the country's trade and removed or blocked part of the government's funding resources, such that according to the UN's special rapporteur, such measures have harmed Iran by about $120 billion.

Speaking on the impacts of the US sanctions on the Iranian people from 2010 to 2019, Javad Salehi Esfahani, a professor at Virginia Tech University, highlighted that the rural families had been harmed the most.

According to him, since 2010, the poverty rate in rural areas has doubled, and it has increased by 60% in urban areas.

The claim that US unilateral sanctions against Iran have not affected people's lives is completely unacceptable; in fact, one of the main reasons the west has been imposing severe sanctions on Iran is to put pressure on the Iranian authorities to make conditions more difficult for the people.

In 2021, UN experts reported that US sanctions had created problems in providing Iranians, including EB patients, with medicines and endangered their health.

Still, the sanctions have hindered the humanitarian aid provided by the international bodies by blocking their banking accounts, and that has impacted the lives of the Afghan refugees to Iran; another instance of the violation of human rights confirmed by the UN special rapporteur.

Such undeniable violations of human rights acknowledged by the UN special rapporteur in Iran are just another example of shame for the US government, which advocates human rights on the one hand and puts maximum pressure on the Iranian nation on the other.
