Rom (IP) - Scores of Italian citizens gathered in front of the UK Embassy in Rom to express their opposition to the extradition of Julian Assange to the US.

Iran PressEurope: Assange established the famous WikiLeaks website, which published in 2010 the images and videos of the US arm's massacre of Iraqi and Afghan people.  The leaked information attracted the attention of the international media.

Later, the US government launched a criminal investigation against WikiLeaks and asked its allies to assist in the investigation.

Italian protesters gathered in front of the British embassy in Rome on Tuesday evening, announcing that the WikiLeaks founder should not be extradited to the US. The British government should release Assange as soon as possible.

After several court sessions held during the last months, the UK's Westminster court issued a verdict under which Assange must extradite to the US.

Now the UK's Secretary of State for the Home Department is in charge of whether to deliver Assange to the US or not.

The demonstrators also criticized the Italian parties' indifference to the extradition, calling it a severe threat to press freedom.
