No need for talks with US when there is nothing to achieve: Iran FM

Tehran (IP)- Iran Foreign Minister, in response to US demand for Tehran-Washington direct negotiation, says that prospects for talks with the US are not clear and "There was no need for direct negotiations if we were not to achieve anything."

Iran PressEurope: On Sunday, during the Foreign Minister's speech at the Munich Security Conference, Lara Khalaf, the Guardian's correspondent, asked Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdullahian, regarding the talks between Iran and the United States, and that some news sources had misinterpreted the Foreign Minister's words.

"In recent weeks, the Americans have asked us to hold direct talks with us through various intermediaries," the Iranian foreign minister said in answer to the Guardian's correspondent in Munich.

The original remarks of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in response to the question is as follows:

The Americans have been asking to negotiate directly with us through various intermediaries in recent weeks. In response, we stated that the prospects for such a dialogue were not very clear to us and that there was no need for direct negotiations if we were not to achieve anything. But if the Americans take a significant initiative, including lifting some sanctions, then it can be said that the Americans are serious.

They keep telling us that Mr. Biden is in good faith. In September, I said in New York that Biden would release $ 10 billion of our frozen assets with foreign banks if he were in good faith.

We do not ask Biden to lend or ask him to give us his own money, but we want him to provide us with our assets in good faith.

I want to emphasize that they speak of goodwill only in words, which is not enough for direct dialogue. They must show their goodwill in practice. They can lift some of the sanctions or release some of our frozen assets, while at the same time with the new talks, even some new sanctions have been imposed on Iranian legal and natural persons by Mr. Biden's administration, and this means that Mr. Biden's administration is following in Trump's footsteps, so public opinion says they are almost one.
