Iran Press/ Asia: Officials announced the move in a statement on Friday, but did not confirm a new date for the event, which was the last run in April 2019.
“Due to the recent local confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia in many places in China, to prevent the spread of the epidemic and effectively protect the lives and health of the people, the organizing committee has decided that the 2021 Wuhan Marathon (which) was originally expected to be held on October 24, 2021, will be postponed until further notice,” the statement read.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the postponement of the race,” it added.
The race was expected to see some 26,000 runners – up on the 24,000 participants in 2019 – descend on the capital of Hubei province, with strict COVID-19 protocols in place.
China reports 43 new COVID-19 cases on Oct 21
China reported 43 new confirmed coronavirus cases for Oct. 21 compared with 21 a day earlier, the country’s health authority said on Friday.
Of the new infections, 28 were locally transmitted cases, according to a statement by the National Health Commission, compared with 13 a day earlier.
The new local cases were reported in the provinces of Gansu, Shaanxi, Hebei, Guizhou, and Qinghai, the autonomous regions of Inner Mongolia and Ningxia, and the city of Beijing.
There were no new deaths, leaving the death toll unchanged at 4,636.
