Parl. passes bill on environmental protection of Caspian Sea

Tehran (IP) - The parliamentarians on Sunday approved the protocol on the protection of biodiversity accession to the Convention on the Framework for the Protection of the Environment of the Caspian Sea.

Iran PressIran news: The Lawmakers on Sunday's open session of the parliament during the review of the protocol for the protection of biodiversity accession to the Convention on the Caspian Sea Environment Protection Framework, with 193 votes in favor, 2 against, and 2 abstentions from a total of 241 MPs present approved the general points and details of the bill.

According to Article 1 of this bill, the Additional Biodiversity Protection Protocol to the Convention on the Caspian Sea Environmental Protection Framework was ratified and authorized to be exchanged.

In defense of the bill, MP Somayeh Rafiei said: "The Caspian Sea has 44 species, 24 of which are exclusive to Iran. Although about 2,000 tons of caviar can be harvested from this sea, in most cases this number has reached several hundred kilograms."

The MP stated that biodiversity in the Caspian Sea had faced many problems, even in Kilka fish, adding: "Dependence of people's livelihood on the Caspian Sea indicates the need to sign this protocol."

Mohammad Taghi Naqdali, while opposing the bill, said: "According to Article 1, 2 and 4 of the Constitution, international treaties and agreements must be ratified in the parliament."

Khomeini Shahr's representative added: "Throughout history, we have had many treaties, such as Treaty of Turkmenchay, which have plundered the interests of the nation, and for this reason, the MPs must be careful about all the provisions of the agreements."
