Iran signs declaration on Caspian Sea environment protection

Russia (IP) – Caspian Sea littoral states signed a joint declaration on protecting the environment and biological resources of the Sea today in St. Petersburg.

Iran PressEurope: The Prosecutors General of Russia, Azerbaijan Republic, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan signed a joint declaration on the protection of the environment and biological resources of the Caspian Sea.

The document was signed at the international conference of the Heads of Prosecutor's of the states of the Caspian region, which was held on July 7 in St. Petersburg by the Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov.

Iranian prosecutor general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri took part in the event via videoconference.

The Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali signed the declaration on behalf of Iran's Attorney General.

Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said before signing the document: "The Caspian Sea is of great strategic importance for all five states and connects their territories into a single ecological system."

He added: "Therefore, joint activities, which are envisaged by the declaration of the Prosecutor Generals of the Caspian Region States on Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection and the Use of Natural Resources of the Caspian Sea, will have a positive impact."

"There are plenty of problems in the Caspian - oil production and its negative consequences, emissions of hazardous production wastes, illegal development of the coastal strip.This meeting and signing of the document will lay the foundation for further five-sided interaction in the Caspian," Igor Krasnov said.

I am sure that it will be intense and productive," Krasnov expressed confidence, proposing to hold meetings at the expert level in early 2022 to discuss cooperation issues in the field of environmental protection of the Caspian Sea in more detail.

Iran's ambassador Jalali also met with the Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov to discuss cooperation between the two countries to fight against drug crimes and other areas of mutual interest.

He also met with the attorney generals of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.

In the meeting, issues such as cooperation of the Caspian Sea littoral states in the fight against narcotics and human trafficking, human rights cooperation, and extradition of prisoners were discussed.
