Damascus (IP) - The Islamic Republic of Iran's foreign minister met with the Syrian President, discussing the expansion of bilateral ties.

Iran PressMiddle East: As the third destination of his trips, after Lebanon and Syria, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Syria's Damascus and met with President Bashar al-Assad.

Upon his arrival, Amir-Abdollahian was welcomed by his Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Mikdad, and told the reporters that he was in Syria to complete his consultations and meet with President Assad.

"We always pay serious attention to regional developments and bilateral relations, meeting, talking and consulting with friends and with the strategic partner of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Syria, and the Syrian authorities," the Iranian foreign minister added.

He further stated that in the recent weeks, important agreements were reached on the comprehensive development of relations, including intensive and planned activities for the development of cooperation between the two countries in areas, namely economy, trade and tourism.

Noting that Syria was on its way to advancement, the Iranian FM stressed that Iran would strongly stand by the Syrian nation as it did during the fight against the US-backed terrorists in the country.

Meeting with President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the diplomatic atmosphere of the UN General Assembly's meetings indicated that the situation has changed in favor of Syria.

Amir-Abdollahian highlighted the pragmatist approach of the new Iranian administration and said that the country was pursuing a sustainable economic plan even in case the illegal sanctions against Iran continued.

He also referred to Afghanistan's issue and noted: "We are in contact with all parties in Afghanistan, including the Taliban, and we call on them to form an inclusive government."

Syria's President, for his part, said that the withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan was a sign of the Western axis' decline: "Countries of the region and Afghanistan's neighbors know that the United States does not accept responsibility for its actions and policies in Afghanistan."

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has the capacity and must enter into talks with its neighbors and other stakeholders in order for Afghanistan's development to yield result," Assad added.

Pointing out the adherence of the Syrian government to the constitutional committee of the country, he referred to Idlib's development and called for the freedom of all parts of Syria from occupation.

The Iranian foreign minister stated that Syria is on the path of development and progress, and the Islamic Republic will stay by the side of Damascus with power, as it did during the terrorist war against Syria.
