Tehran (IP) - Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture has organized an event to review the solutions to fight desertification.

Iran PressIran news: The event was held on Saturday on the occasion of the ‘World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought’ with the Iranian Agriculture Minister Kazem Khavazi and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)  Representative to Iran, Gerold Bodeker in attendance.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Head of the Forests, Range and Watershed Management Organization (FRWO), Masoud Mansour said: “More than 88% of Iran can be affected by desertification. of this figure, 37 million hectares, or 27% of the country, are at risk of severe or moderate destruction.”

Mansour added: "187 regions in the country are exposed to wind erosion, causing damages worth of 3,000 billion tomans per year."

According to the official, Iran has taken measures to combat desertification on 7.5 million hectares, including planting seedlings, sowing seeds, and mulching.

'The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought' is a United Nations' observance celebrated each year on June 17. The purpose of celebrating such an event is to raise individuals' awareness towards the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought.
