Iran Press/ Iran news: After the end of the imposed war, due to the need to rebuild the air defense network and confronting arms sanctions, the Islamic Republic of Iran has started a major diligent movement in the direction of self-sufficiency in defense. It has entered the club of defense equipment manufacturers, including various air defense systems.
The close relationship between the country's defense industry and the IRGC and Army operational units and the provision of operational needs over the past years can be considered one of the reasons for the country's success in air defense. So far, different types of these missile systems with different capabilities have been developed and operated in the country.
One of these systems with significant capabilities is the Khordad-15 air defense system, which had unveiled on June 9, 2019, and joined the country's air defense network. The Khordad-15 air defense system, in the final stage of the joint air defense exercise of 'Modafean Aseman Velayat 98' (The Defenders of Sky 98), took operational action for the first time in real combat conditions against the hostile targets.
Regarding the Khordad-15 air defense system, Iran’s Minister of Defense said: "In the comprehensive air defense network of the country, it is necessary to use a variety of air defense systems with different ranges from a few kilometers to a hundred kilometers. Meanwhile, the role of long and medium-range systems in deterring enemy aggression and countering the threat of air targets to protect vital facilities and large cities is crucial."
Overview:
The Khordad-15 air defense system was built by the Aerospace Industries Organization affiliated with the Ministry of Defense of Iran. This system is an upgraded version of the Talaash (Endeavor) air defense system. The development of the Khordad-15 system shows that the designers of our country's air defense have considered the main threats in medium-range and altitude, which include threats from fighter jets.
The Khordad-15 system has the ability to effectively engage with air targets with high offensive capabilities such as reconnaissance aircraft, bombers, and tactical fighter aircraft, even stealth ones and UAVs, as well as the ability to detect cruise missiles.
At the same time, the Khordad-15 system has increased the firepower of the army air defense to counter large-scale air attacks. This system is equipped with a phased array radar with the possibility of simultaneous engagement with several targets and independent launch pads in which Sayyad-2 and Sayyad-3 missiles have been used.
Another important feature of this system is its tactics and high mobility to detect and intercept simultaneously with only one radar. It is a kind of system with the least components.
One of the interesting advantages of the Khordad-15 system is the possibility of carrying and using two different types of missiles with different ranges to carry and launch Sayyad-2 (Hunter) missile with a range of 75 km and Sayyad-3 with a range of 120 km at the same time.
Using several types of missiles in one system saves costs. Thus, the Khordad-15 air defense system has a range longer than the Russian Buk-M3 missile system with a range of 70 km and the American Patriot missile system with a range of 70 km. Achieving such capabilities that can compare an Iranian defense system with the defense systems of Russia and the United States is an honor that has certainly been achieved by relying on young and domestic forces and trust in indigenous capabilities.
Features:
The Khordad-15 can detect, intercept, and destroy six targets simultaneously, which shows its agility and high speed. This capability has been less seen in Iran's indigenous defense systems before.
Another prominent feature of this system is its mobility so that the time to start the operation is less than 5 minutes. The system can detect targets such as fighter jets and attack drones from 150 km away and intercept them within the range of up to 120 km and a maximum altitude of 27 km by using Sayyad-3 missile.
The range of the Sayyad-2 missile of this system has been announced as 75 km to deal with air targets, and its altitude is 27 km. The ability to fire two types of missiles provides the advantage that the system has more options to deal with various air threats.
Another advantage of this system is the detection of stealth targets, which these days have been designed and built in the form of fifth-generation fighter jets and various types of stealth drones. The system can detect stealth targets from a distance of 85 km and destroy them within 45 km. Sayyad-3 missiles of this system have significant capabilities in targeting air targets and are the newest member of the Sayyad family. The platform used for the Sayyad-3 missile is the 'Standard-1' missile.
The missile's body and overall appearance are similar to those of the Standard family, and its tail fins are similar to those of the Patriot missile family. The system uses an infrared targeting guidance system and semi-active and active radars.
One of the important features of the Khordad-15 defense system compared to other similar systems in the country is the increase in the number of missile launchers on the vehicle. Previously, each Sayyad rocket launcher carried 2 missiles. Still, in the Khordad-15 system, this number reached 4, and the volume of fire in each unit of this system has increased compared to previous models. Khordad-15 system radar is a more advanced example of Najm (Star) 802 radar called Najm 804, and was designed and manufactured by Iran Electronics Industries and was unveiled in the spring of 2019.
The use of Najm 804 phased array radar in the Khordad-15 system has significantly increased its efficiency and resistance to enemy electronic warfare. Its flat panel antenna sits horizontally behind the carrier truck for road traffic conditions. In addition, this radar and command and control unit are located on a carrier. Because missile launchers are also stationed on carriers, the Khordad-15 defense system has high mobility.
