Activists in South Africa's Cape Town are demanding that the Holocaust and Genocide Centre include an exhibit on the ongoing genocide in Gaza, highlighting the need for recognition and education about current atrocities by Israel.

Why It Matters:

Protestors have requested that the museum include a display of the crimes being committed by the Zionist regime. This situation has reached an intensified level of desperation, as people are being starved to death due to Israel’s orchestrated ban in food and essential supplies into Gaza.

The Big Picture:

Located in central Cape Town, the Holocaust and Genocide Centre forms part of a compound that includes the Gardens Shul and the South African Jewish Museum. The protest serves to highlight the double standards employed by the Jewish organisations that run the museum and manage the narrative around genocide.

What They're Saying:

In a statement intended to be delivered to the Cape Town Holocaust and Genocide Centre, the protestors noted: “The Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, as its name suggests, reflects the importance of remembering and educating about past genocides, in the hope that such tragedies never occur again."

"However, we are witnessing a genocide unfolding against an innocent, defenceless Palestinian population in Gaza — an affront to our collective humanity and conscience.”

They continued, “We believe it is both necessary and just that the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre includes the documentation and remembrance of this ongoing genocide alongside those of the past. We request the opportunity to collaborate with your curatorial and archival team in contributing images and texts that bear witness to these events, ensuring that the suffering, resilience, and memory of the Palestinian people are preserved and acknowledged in line with the Centre’s commitment to truth and remembrance.”
