The Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations on Wednesday called for immediate and effective action by the international community to lift illegal and illegitimate sanctions against developing countries.

Iran Press/America: Zahra Ershadi, an Iranian diplomat to the UN called illegal and illegitimate sanctions against developing countries a serious obstacle to the fight against the Coronavirus while speaking at the sixth annual meeting of the Science, Technology and Innovation Forum of the UN Economic and Social Council.

"Unilateral coercive measures have targeted the right to life and health of ordinary people," the Iranian diplomat said. 

"The right to development, including the right to access new technologies for developing countries in a context where multilateralism is under increasing pressure, will not be realized," Ershadi said at the summit.

She stressed that the international community must take immediate and effective measures to eliminate any unilateral coercive measures, including illegal and illegitimate sanctions against developing countries, as such unjustifiable and illegal actions, in addition to violating the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law, prevents the realization of economic and social development in countries.

Unilateral and oppressive US sanctions, which include basic items and even medicine and, have caused many problems for the people living in the countries facing the US sanctions, especially the coronavirus patients.

The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, had previously criticized US hostile policies in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak, saying that the world could no longer remain silent in the face of US economic terrorism linked to medical terrorism. 219
