The fifteenth round of the International Meeting on Syria in Astana format

Sochi (IP) - Russia, Iran, and Turkey, as guarantors of the settlement process in Syria, expect the United States to return to negotiations in the Astana format as an observer, Russian presidential special envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said on Wednesday.

Iran PressIran News: "We are still open to American participation and believe that, after all, it would be the right thing for them to resume their presence and try to find mutually acceptable options for settling the Syria crisis with the US," Lavrentyev said at a press conference following the 15th meeting on Syria in the Astana format, held on Wednesday in Sochi.

Turkey, Iran, and Russia initiated the Astana meeting to bring the warring sides in Syria together to find a permanent solution to the decade-long war. The main agenda items have been the constitutional system, security, and resettlement.

The Astana process's first meeting was in Turkey in January 2017 to facilitate UN-sponsored peace talks in Geneva.

The fifteenth round of the International Meeting on Syria in Astana format was held on 16-17 February 2021 in Sochi.
