Iran Press/Iran news: Joe Biden has said that he would not lift US sanctions against Iran unless Tehran showed its commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
In response to Biden's remarks, Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with CGTN of China that the United States must first lift sanctions on Iran.
He stated that Iran was ready to return to its full commitments after the lifting of all US sanctions against Tehran.
“The situation is quite clear. It was not Iran that left the nuclear deal, but the United States that withdrew from the agreement. The United States decided to suspend its participation in JCPOA. They left the table and re-imposed sanctions. Now, if their policy is to return to the deal and become a member of JCPOA again, they must lift the sanctions. What we did, in fact, was a response to the US violation of the agreement and to the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran. As I said, the reduction of commitments by Iran is, in fact, an amendable measure under Article 36 of JCPOA,” Araghchi explained.
“When they come back and lift the sanctions against Iran and we confirmed that the sanctions had been lifted, we would be ready to return to JCPOA immediately,” he noted.
Asked about what would happen if Biden gets involved in other issues such as missile issues and Iran's regional activities, Araghchi said JCPOA was only about Iran's nuclear program and had two pillars, which include "restrictions on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions."
He said that Biden must reform this policy, adding that if they wanted to maintain the deal as a very important achievement of diplomacy and a very important tool in the non-proliferation regime, they had to decide very quickly because they’re running out of time.
