Iran PressEurope: Iran's Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali announced that the first consignment of the Russian COVID-19 vaccine called 'Sputnik V' was dispatched to Iran by Mahan Airlines today (Thursday).

Jalali said that following the signing of the contract for the purchase of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine and its joint production between Tehran and Moscow, today, this vaccine's first shipment to Tehran has been carried out by an Iranian plane.

He announced that the second shipment would leave for Tehran by mid-February and the third shipment by February 28, noting that this process would continue in the future also.

He stated that the Russian vaccine (Sputnik V) has been registered in more than 16 countries, including Iran, and the Islamic Republic has been the 16th country to register the vaccine with an efficacy of more than 91% last week.

According to the agreement reached with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the countries decided to jointly produce this vaccine in Iran, Jalali pointed out.

Accordingly, a delegation from the Iranian Ministry of Health is scheduled to arrive in Moscow in the coming days to hold final talks, he added.

Jalali highlighted that the contract between Iran and Russia for the purchase and joint production of the Russian vaccine was the beginning of cooperation between the two countries in biotechnology.

High efficacy and safety of 'Sputnik V'

The ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran referred to the efficacy and safety level of this Russian vaccine, citing the report of the medical journal 'The Lancet,' saying: "No serious side effects have been reported in the third phase of Sputnik V which is 91.6% effective and can provide immunity for two years or more."

The Lancet recently reviewed the third phase of clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine in an article. The article's result shows that this vaccine is safe and effective and guarantees complete protection against severe cases of COVID-19.
