The British Foreign Office on Monday summoned Myanmar's ambassador, in response to a military coup and the arrest of some high officials in that country.

Iran PressEurope: "In a meeting with the Myanmar ambassador, the Deputy Foreign Secretary for Asia condemned the detention of civilians and called for their immediate release," said Nigel Adams, a spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office.

The Myanmar army staged a coup against the ruling National Democratic Alliance party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, on Monday morning in protest of what it called parliamentary election fraud.

Myanmar's National Unity Party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, claimed victory in the by-elections three months ago with about 83 percent of the vote, but the military has nullified the election results by accusing the ruling party of rigging the election.

The Myanmar military coup, however, quickly met with regional and international reactions.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as Myanmar's president and some members of the ruling party.

Following the military coup in Myanmar, the European Union, the United States, Turkey, Japan, Canada, Singapore, India and Australia condemned the coup and called for a return to democracy in Myanmar.

The United Nations Security Council is decided to address the recent coup in Myanmar in the upcoming emergency session on Tuesday.
