Syrian FM's sanction is obstruction against path to peace: MFA Spox

Tehran (IP) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the sanction of the Foreign Minister of the Syrian Arab Republic, as the person in charge of foreign policy, means nothing but obstruction against the path of peace.

Iran PressIran News: Saeed Khatibzadeh called the European Union's sanction of the Syrian Foreign Minister an unreasonable and unconstructive move that would increase the Syrian crisis and complicate the political process of resolving the crisis.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman added: "Such an unwise and irrational act will only lead to further divergence and, as a result, increase distrust between Brussels and Damascus."

Khatibzadeh strongly urged the European Union to reconsider its move, especially as the European Union was expected to condemn the Zionist regime's attacks and aggression on Syrian soil and express its strong opposition to unjust US sanctions against the Syrian people.

Faisal Mekdad was added to the EU sanctions list due to what it called the difficult situation in Syria. In this way, he will be subject to confiscation of property and a ban on travel to member countries of the union.

Faisal Mekdad was for many years the former Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria, Walid al-Muallem, who recently died of heart disease.
