Tehran (IP) - Iran’s minister of Information and Communications Technology said that startup companies are the locomotives of the digital economy, announcing that 5000 startup cores in the country are competing with each other.

Iran Press/Iran News: Mohammad-Javad Azari-Jahromi stated that three years ago, Iran's digital economy was zero, but last year the Statistics Center stated that its share was one and a half percent of GDP.

“There is a company in the country that has been able to reach a value of one billion dollars, and we have more than 10 companies whose value is more than 5 trillion tomans,” Azari-Jahromi announced, highlighting: "These are the locomotives of the digital economy."

He stated that there are 5,000 startup cores in the country that grow and compete with each other and deliver products, but strong traditional hubs in the country do not support these startups.

Despite many problems, the startups have grown a lot, and they have been provided by the government's facilities, and some have been supported by the parliament, he highlighted.

“Startups contributed to us during the coronavirus outbreak. As a result, the country's education is managed in a way that online service startups have grown by 1,200 percent. Although some sectors, such as tourism and transportation, had problems and lost strength, there was growth in education and health sectors,” the minister said.

Referring to the cooperation with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), he said: “Two platforms have been designed to connect Iranian businesses to other countries, and we have developed in the form of connecting to Turkey, Republic of Azerbaijan, and Russia, and we also had a glimpse of Afghanistan and Iraq. It was successful in Afghanistan and Iraq, and we made good progress.”
