Why it matters:
As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, Iran warns that the Security Council’s continued silence in the face of serious violations threatens international peace and security. This inaction not only emboldens aggressors but also erodes the foundations of the UN Charter.
The big picture:
Following the Israeli attack on Iran and Western efforts to trigger the Snapback Mechanism, Iran asserts that multilateralism and the rule of law are facing unprecedented pressure. Aggressive actions, impunity, and the political misuse of the Security Council by certain Western powers have sparked concerns over the selective application of international norms and the erosion of the Council’s credibility.
What he's saying:
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the “Maintenance of International Peace and Security,” Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative, Amir Saeid Iravani, emphasized:
• The Israeli regime, with direct support from the United States, launched a large-scale act of aggression against Iran on 13 June 2025. The Security Council’s failure to respond to this blatant violation encourages further destabilizing behavior.
• The attempt by the three European parties to the JCPOA to trigger an illegal and baseless “snapback” under Resolution 2231 was politically motivated, lacked any legal standing, and has been widely rejected by the international community.
• The erosion of trust in the United Nations stems from its failure to uphold the Charter impartially. The Security Council must ensure that no member, regardless of its power, misuses the UN for unilateral or politically motivated purposes.
He underscored the urgent need to reaffirm the primacy of the UN Charter and to restore genuine multilateralism grounded in equality, mutual respect, and the rule of law.
