Why it matters:
The statements come after a formal notification by the three European powers regarding the planned reimposition of sanctions on Iran on September 28. Tehran has firmly rejected the notice, warning of serious diplomatic consequences.
Iran’s stance:
“We categorically reject the notification regarding the reactivation of sanctions,” said the Iranian envoy, Iravani.
He accused the European Troika of failing to honor their commitments under previous agreements, adding that they are “hiding behind empty promises while following Washington’s instructions.”
“Any attempt to reimpose sanctions constitutes a direct violation of international law,” Iravani emphasized.
The envoy further noted that the three countries have “undermined the very framework they claim to protect,” weakening dialogue and rewarding aggressive behavior.
“This reckless step sets a dangerous precedent,” he warned.
Broader context:
Iran reaffirmed that its nuclear program remains entirely peaceful and criticized the UN Security Council for “missing a vital opportunity for dialogue and consensus.” Iravani placed full responsibility for the escalation and its potential consequences on the European Troika.
