Why it matters:
Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right cabinet want to continue the war in Gaza at all costs, but the army believes that, given the recent casualties in the region, continuing the war is not in Israel’s interest and that Netanyahu must accept a deal, even if bitter.
The big picture:
One of Netanyahu’s major challenges, and a reason he wants to continue the war, is that if the conflict ends, his political life may end, and he will face his charges. Because of this, Netanyahu does not want to end the war, which has angered the families of prisoners of war held by Hamas. However, Netanyahu has opposed holding the meeting and has not authorized the presentation or approval of the army's plans.
What they're saying:
Political sources who spoke to Ma’ariv say that the army is unaware of the goals and decisions of the country's political leadership. One source warned that continuing the operation in Gaza could have negative consequences for the army. Another source noted that the army's forces, especially on the front lines, are facing severe attrition and that if the war is prolonged, it will have long-term consequences for their performance and morale.
Go deeper:
The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported, citing informed sources, that Eyal Zamir, the chief of staff of the regime’s army, canceled his previously scheduled trip to Washington, which had been planned for Tuesday of this week.
According to the report, Zamir attributed the cancellation to the lack of an agreement on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and stated that his decision was conditional on the realization of such an agreement.
