Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister announced detailed negotiations with European representatives and confirmed that talks on lifting sanctions and the nuclear issue would continue.

Why it matters:

These negotiations are taking place at a time when Iran and European countries are seeking to revive the 2015 nuclear deal and resolve issues related to sanctions. Continuing these consultations could lead to progress in the negotiations.

The big picture:

The discussions are taking place at the Iranian consulate in Istanbul, led by Kazem Gharibabadi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi, deputies of Iran's Foreign Minister. The main topics will focus on the lifting of sanctions and Iran's peaceful nuclear program.

What he's saying:

Kazem Gharibabadi: "With Majid Takht Ravanchi, deputy FM, we held a serious, frank, and detailed discussion with the E3/EU PDs. While seriously criticizing their stances regarding the recent war of aggression against our people, we explained our principled positions, including on the so-called snapback mechanism."

"Both sides came to the meeting with specific ideas, the various aspects of which were examined. It was agreed that consultations on this matter will continue."

Go deeper:

The continuation of these talks can be seen as a positive step towards revitalizing the nuclear deal, the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),  and reducing tensions in Iran-Europe relations. These talks demonstrate Iran’s determination to continue dialogue and strive for a lasting agreement. Given the challenges, continued consultations can help create a positive atmosphere for resolving nuclear and sanctions issues.
