Iran Press/ America: At the Security Council meeting on "End Unilateral Coercive Measures Now" held on Wednesday evening, Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Majid Takht-Ravanchi said that unilateral, coercive measures such as sanctions, disrupt the economy, access to financial systems and foreign reserves, and even food and medicine.
Referring to the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative effects of sanctions on human rights, Takht-Ravanchi stated that sanctions target children, the sick, the elderly, and the poor, and have dire humanitarian consequences that could turn into a humanitarian crisis.
He also pointed out that sanctions are very dangerous during the COVID-19 pandemic because if one country is not safe, other countries will not be safe either, and the virus will spread and kill many people.
Noting the 40-year-old US sanctions against the Iranian nation, Takht-Ravanchi explained: "Iran is currently dealing with the broadest sanctions ever imposed on any other country, and these sanctions have severely hampered Iran's efforts to combat the coronavirus outbreak.
Iran's permanent representative to the UN stressed that the inhumane sanctions are imposed by countries that claim to be the greatest defenders of human rights.
