Iran Press/ America: "I've been clear on this: the situation is extremely serious and further action is required," Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Friday.
Ford said, "Effective Monday, November 23 at 12:01 am, Toronto and Peel will be moved into lockdown."
The sweeping restrictions include shuttering gyms and personal care services such as hair salons, the strictest level in the province’s restrictions, in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
"With the numbers rising rapidly in certain regions, we have to make the tough, but necessary decisions now to protect our hospitals, long-term care, and retirement homes, and every person in this province," Ford said in a statement.
As part of the changes, indoor social gatherings in Toronto and Peel are only allowed with one’s household, while outdoor events are limited to 10 people. Weddings and funerals, along with religious services, are now limited to 10 people both inside and outside.
The province also announced that the regions of Durham and Waterloo will join Hamilton, and Halton and York Regions in the “red zone,” with the highest restrictions short of a lockdown under the government’s color-coded COVID-19 framework.
For regions in the red zone, social gatherings are now limited to five people indoors and 25 people outdoors.
