Iran Press/Iran News: "As a neighbour and in view of our numerous historical commonalities with regional peoples, Iran expresses its satisfaction with the recent decision by the leaders of the two countries with the Russian Federation’s intervention to end the military conflict and begin the process of diplomatic resolution," Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the 20th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation that was held through video conference, the president hoped that the two countries can settle their disputes in a peaceable environment and within the framework of international law.
"To this end, Iran presents a peace plan in order to establish a ceasefire and establish peace, and also conduct intensive negotiations with the conflicting parties and other countries of interest, and we shall not spare any effort to de-escalate tensions and disputes and establish sustainable and fair security, stability and peace in this region," he added.
Meanwhile, Mahmoud Vaezi, the Iranian president’s chief of staff asked Azerbaijan and Armenia to adherence to international borders and the protection of the civil rights of all.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also issued a statement on Tuesday welcoming the trilateral peace agreement.
Hundreds of Russian peacekeeping troops have been deployed to the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, following a deal to end conflict in the region.
The agreement, signed by Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, follows six weeks of heavy fighting and advances by Azeri forces. On Sunday, Azerbaijan proclaimed victory in the region’s second-largest city. 101
