Olympics 2020 :
Tokyo Games' ticket refund process to start in November

Ticket holders in Japan unable to attend next year's postponed Tokyo Olympics will be able to apply for refunds from Nov. 10 to Nov. 30 through its official website, the local organizing committee said Friday.

Iran PressAsia: Ticket refund applications for the Paralympics, also postponed for a year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, will be accepted from Dec. 1-21, the organizers said.

Tickets that have already been purchased remain valid in principle for the corresponding events. Refunds for tickets purchased in Japan will be made starting in late December for Olympic tickets and mid-January for Paralympic tickets.

In principle, refunds can be requested for each individual ticket, although group tickets, including those for wheelchair users and their escorts, must be refunded together. Fees for printing paper tickets and delivery will also be refunded.

Those who purchased tickets using a Visa credit card will have the amount credited back to their account, while cash purchases at convenience stores will be reimbursed to the buyer by bank transfer. Once the refund process is completed on the website, it cannot be canceled.

Around 4.48 million tickets have been sold for the Olympics so far, and nearly a million for the Paralympics, according to the organizing committee.

Ticket holders outside of Japan, who bought tickets through Authorized Ticket Resellers, will be asked to follow those sellers' refund procedures, the organizers added.

A final plan for COVID-19 countermeasures during the Games will not be decided until Tokyo 2020 officials meet in November. As Tokyo 2020 requires $800 million in ticket sales for its operating budget, the final cost of postponement will not be determined until the year's end.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was postponed for the first time in their history. The Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will now be held on 23 July 2021.

On September 7, 2013, the International Olympic Committee awarded the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in 2020 to Tokyo, which was chosen over fellow Candidate Cities Istanbul and Madrid after two rounds of voting during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires.

Tokyo 2020 became the first Olympics ever postponed in peacetime earlier this year as the coronavirus wreaked havoc across the globe, claiming lives and forcing the cancelation of sporting and cultural events.

The Olympics have previously only been canceled completely during periods of World War - in 1916, 1940 and 1944 - but never suspended or postponed.
