Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the presidents of Iran and Russia are seriously pursuing the implementation of agreements and the development of cooperation between the two countries.

Iran PressEurope: "We have good relations," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told a joint news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday.

He pointed to the growing trend of cooperation between the two countries and stated: "We hope to have good cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus."

He added: "In today's meeting, we examined the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of transportation, visas, and transportation of students and businessmen."

Zarif noted: "In the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister, we discussed and exchanged views on issues related to energy, economy, banking and the meeting of the Joint Commission for Economic and Trade Cooperation between Iran and Russia."

"We talked about the nuclear agreement (JCPOA), and we mentioned Russia's key role and the destructive efforts of the United States and the agreement in the UN Security Council to oppose sanctions on Iran, " he said.

"The United States has failed, and Russia and China have played a very important role in this process," he said, adding: We appreciate Russia's role.

"Washington's efforts to reinstate sanctions against Iran were opposed by the international community and they (US officials) were told that they were not allowed to do so," he said.

Noting that the United States will take over the rotating presidency of the Security Council next month, Zarif added: "We hope to continue countering US illegal efforts in the Security Council."

Zarif also said that talks are ongoing following the Astana talks to resolve the Syrian issue and that the three countries are participating in the political settlement process and they believe that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria must be respected.

Zarif added: "The structure of the Astana talks reduces the level of confrontation and violence in Syria, and it addresses various issues, including the exchange of prisoners."

According to Iran's Foreign Minister, the Astana talks do not mean that they will replace the Syrian Constitutional Committee. We will make every effort to ensure the outcome of these negotiations.

Regarding the extension of the agreement between Iran and Russia, the Iranian Foreign Minister said: "We have a cooperation agreement with Russia, which is related to 2001, and this agreement will be automatically renewed."
