Russian Foreign Minister,Sergei Lavrov

The US sanctions against Iran have not worked and will not work, said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, adding the desire of the United States to reconfigure the dialogue on the problems of the Middle East and North Africa on an anti-Iranian track is futile.

Iran PressEurope: "The trouble is that in recent years the current US administration has demonized Iran," Lavrov said in an interview with Sputnik. "Iran has been declared the main problem of this entire region, including other regions of the world, where Iran is, in one way or another, accused of interfering in the internal affairs of the respective countries. The Americans are trying to reconfigure the entire dialogue on the problems of the Middle East and North Africa on an anti-Iranian track."

"This is, firstly, unpromising, because problems can be solved sustainably and reliably only through agreements between all the participants. And the entire current logic of American policy is based on the fact that Iran should be made the center of all efforts to contain, punish, and that's just a change of regime that will finally allow the entire region to breathe freely. This is a dead-end path. The sanctions with which they are trying to stifle Iran, they have never worked and will not work now," Lavrov stressed.

Recently, Washington has been trying to restore UN sanctions against Iran. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo submitted to the Security Council Chairman a complaint about Iran's failure to comply with the provisions of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program to launch the procedure for restoring anti-Iranian sanctions under Resolution 2231.

The JCPOA, in particular, provided that the arms embargo would be lifted from Iran within five years, the supply of weapons is possible earlier, but only with the permission of the UN Security Council. The deal in its original form did not last even three years. In May 2018, the United States announced a unilateral withdrawal from it and the restoration of tough sanctions against Tehran.
