Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister has said on Tuesday that the country supports direct talks between Iran and the United States and is are ready to assist the two countries at the beginning of the talks.

Iran PressEurope: Sergei Lavrov made this statement on Tuesday in the presence of professors and students of the Moscow State University of International Relations affiliated to the Russian Foreign Ministry, which was broadcast on the Russian television channel 24.

"We are ready to negotiate with both sides to pave the way for direct talks, but only if both are interested," Lavrov said, adding: "We believe that it is better than anything else to raise disputes and issues directly and receive immediate answers."

He once again questioned the United States over the withdrawal from the nuclear deal, saying: "The Americans not only withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) but also banned other countries from doing business with Iran."

Lavrov noted: "Some US allies have humbly asked this country to be exempted from trade bans with Iran, a situation that 10 years ago, no one in the world even thought about."

Referring to recent US efforts to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran, the Russian Foreign Minister said: "The United States wants to use the legal mechanism in the UN Security Council against Tehran, which had been intended to restore sanctions if Iran had not fulfilled its obligations."

The Russian top diplomat went on to say: "The United States does not have such a right today, because Washington has already left JCPOA and by withdrawing from this agreement, it has waived practically all its rights in this field."
