Gas pipeline blast, terrorist attack: Syrian minister

The Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Ghanem called the explosion of the main gas pipeline between al-Dumayr and Adra near Damascus this morning (Monday) as a terrorist operation.

Iran PressMiddle East: Ali Ghanem told the official Syrian News Agency (SANA) this morning: "After assessing the situation, it became clear that the explosion in the al-Arabi gas pipeline between Adra and al-Dumayr areas was the result of a terrorist attack."

The fire caused by the explosion has now been extinguished by the efforts of the Syrian firefighter and civil defense teams (urban defense), according to SANA.

The Syrian minister of electricity also announced that electricity production in some power plants has been resumed, and with increase their activity, a number of provinces will be partially and gradually supplied with electricity.

The explosion in the al-Arabi gas pipeline between al-Dumayr and Adra districts took place this morning on the outskirts of Damascus, causing power outages in Syria.

The Syrian minister of electricity also stated: "The explosion this morning (Monday) was the sixth explosion of its kind in this pipeline and caused the reduction of gas pressure in Deir Ali power plant and the failure of other power plants and power outages."

He noted that the Syrian Ministry of Energy, in coordination with the Syrian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, is working to reestablish electricity current in the coming hours.
