US attempt to activate trigger mechanism will only result in its humiliation: Iran envoy

Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations referred to the United States' efforts to activate the trigger mechanism, stressing that this would only result in the humiliation of the United States again.

Iran Press/America: Majid Takht-Ravanchi, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, wrote on his Twitter page on Thursday: "US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo yesterday called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231."

Noting that Security Council Resolution 2231 was approved by the Security Council, Takht-Ravanchi added: "The United States has suspended its participation in the UN Security Council agreement; This action violates both (JCPOA and the UN Security Council resolution)."

Recalling that the international community last week denied the claim of US right to use the trigger mechanism, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations stressed: "The US should not try its luck because it will only lead to its humiliation once again."

Following the rejection of its proposed UN Security Council resolution extending indefinitely the arms embargo on Iran, the United States has put activating the trigger mechanism on its agenda; Other Permanent Members of the Security Council have stated that the US does not have the legal authority to activate the trigger mechanism, citing the official withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA.

Members of the UN Security Council oppose US action in this regard.

Other nations say the US has no standing to make the demand because the Trump administration pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear deal two years ago.

According to the JCPOA agreement, the arms embargo on Iran was supposed to end on October 18, 2020. But the United States intends to extend the embargo.

The United States announced its withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, on 8th, May 2018.
