Tehran (IP) - Director-general of the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants Affairs of Iran's Ministry of Interior said that the process of unfairly retaining the majority of refugees in a few developing countries must be stopped and international support for refugees should be balanced and based on justice.

Iran Press/Iran News: Mehdi Mahmoudi, the director-general of the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants Affairs of the Ministry of Interior stated that World Refugee Day is a test to differentiate between the policies announced and implemented by governments in the international arena. Humanitarianism should spare no effort in supporting the millions of homeless and needy people who have been forced to leave their homes for some reason.

He added, "Despite Iran's economic problems, the 8-year imposed war, the reconstruction of the country and the illegal and inhumane US sanctions, and insufficient assistance from the international community the Islamic Republic of Iran has hosted a large population of refugees for more than 4 decades.

Mahmoudi also said that after four decades of hosting refugees Iran expects that, serious steps should be taken to achieve the goals of the World Refugee Convention and strategic solutions for Afghan refugees, and voluntary return of refugees to their home country should be seriously supported as the best solution.

Mahmoudi concluded: "In parallel with these measures, the resettlement of refugees in third countries should be pursued and supported more seriously."
