Iran Press/ West Asia: According to reports by Lebanese and regional outlets, first published by privately-owned news agency 'Akhbar al-Yawm', Qatar backed by the U.S. and Egypt, will likely succeed in convincing Tehran to mediate with Hezbollah in order to break the impasse in the political crisis.
Qatar is reportedly promoting a third candidate, who could be Army Commander General Joseph Aoun or any other candidate who might enjoy the consensus of the parliamentary blocs after the divided Lebanese parliament failed to elect one of the two main candidates Marada leader Suleiman Franjieh and former Minister Jihad Azour.
Hezbollah and Amal movement have renewed many times their support for Franjieh, despite international efforts to reach a third-man solution.
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea for his part said that the opposition will also cling to Azour as long as Hezbollah is clinging to its candidate and refusing a third option.
According to the report, Qatar will ask Iran to convince Hezbollah of a third-man solution.
Meanwhile, the Head of Loyalty to Resistance parliamentary bloc Hajj Mohammad Raad received the new Qatari ambassador to Lebanon Saud bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani in the context of an introductory meeting on Monday.
MP Raad discussed with Al-Thani the horizons of cooperation between Lebanon and Qatar in light of the awaited recovery of the Lebanese situation.
Meanwhile, the Head of Hezbollah Politburo Sayyed Ibrahim Amin Al-Sayyed reiterated the Party’s support to the former minister Sleiman Franjiyeh for the presidency.
Lebanon’s elongated political stalemate stems from deep divides between the different parties as well as a lack of agreement over a presidential candidate.
The crises-stricken country has failed to elect a president at least 12 times since former President Michel Aoun left office in October last year, with each party pushing for its own preferred candidate.
However, Tehran has repeatedly stressed that the decision of who takes leadership remains in the hands of the Lebanese.
