Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi

Tehran (IP) - Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Iran, Russia, and Turkey as the guarantors of the Astana Process are working to strengthen Syrian-Syrian dialogues and help Syrian people decide about their future.

Iran Press/Iran news: Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Sunday said the three countries will do this by setting up de-escalation zones, establishing Constitution Committee, and pursuing the process of dialogue and national reconciliation.

He further rejected claims of some media outlets about the decision of the guarantor states on the Astana Process regarding the future of the Syrian government, describing it baseless.

Reiterating that it is only the Syrian people who will decide about their future, the type of government and their rulers, he said that Iran has always stood by the Syrian government and people to fight terrorism and will continue to do so in the future.

On April 22, The Trilateral Ministerial Meeting of the Guarantor States of the Astana Process (Iran, Turkey, and Russia) was held via teleconference.

The session formed by Mohammad Javad Zarif, Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu and Sergey Lavrov Iranian, Turkish and Russian Foreign Ministers in attendance.

They discussed the latest situation in Idlib, the Syrian Constitutional Committee, and the need to lift unilateral sanctions, especially given the outbreak of coronavirus, and exchanged views on the humanitarian situation in Syria and the return of the Syrian refugees.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.

On February 14, 2019  leaders of the Astana process - Russia, Iran, and Turkey -  held a trilateral summit in the Russian Black Sea resort, Sochi.

Three issues dominated the talks: first, what should happen to the Idlib province and the demilitarized zone and second how to move forward on the formation of a constitutional committee, which is considered a key step towards a political solution.

Taken together, these two issues constitute the vital topics to the Astana process since its inception two years ago.
