The US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook

The US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook has said that the Washington is hopeful that the United Nations Security Council will extend an arms embargo on Iran before it expires in October, expressing that the US will exercise all diplomatic options to accomplish that.

Iran PressAmerica: Brian Hook made the remarks at a news conference on Thursday on the proposed US resolution to extend Iran's arms embargo on the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The US Special Representative for Iran said that the United States had drafted a Security Council resolution on the issue, which would need nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, Britain, or France to pass.

"No one can argue that Iran has fully complied with its commitments in the preliminary provisions of the UN Security Council, which were aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Middle East," he claimed.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to invoke a provision in the Iran nuclear agreement, which the Trump administration pulled out of in 2018, in an effort to either extend an arms embargo on Iran or reimpose even harsher UN sanctions, the New York Times reported on Sunday.
