Tehran (IP) - According to the agreement with the Georgian government, 101 Iranian prisoners will be handed over to the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran at Urmia Airport this evening.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that “With the efforts of Iran’s Foreign Ministry and within the framework of the agreement with the Georgian government, 101 Iranian prisoners will be handed over to the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran at Urmia Airport in a few hours.”

Foreign Ministry also noted, “Supporting Iranian citizens abroad is one of the most important priorities of the Ministry, and our country's political and consular agencies have a special mission to take full advantage of the existing capacities to assist and address the situation of Iranian citizens, especially prisoners abroad. Given the current state of the coronavirus worldwide, this is the most important issue.”

“In this context, supportive measures such as obtaining information about the health of Iranian citizens, the possibility of face-to-face visits, providing the required personal items, granting furlough or transferring them to the country have been and are on the agenda.”

“Foreign Ministry, through the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tbilisi and taking advantage of the capacity of diplomatic consultations and the existing platform in the field of judicial cooperation between the two countries, has made efforts to achieve the desired solution in order to repatriate the Iranian prisoners to their country for the past year and a half. 

“According to the agreement with the Georgian government, 101 Iranian prisoners will be handed over to the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran at Urmia Airport on the afternoon today.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciates the positive action of the Georgian government and judicial authorities, including the judiciary, the Ministry of Justice, the anti-corona national task force of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the Civil Aviation Authority, Mahan Airlines, and the Governor of West Azerbaijan, and other officials that provide the necessary ground for the prisoners’ repatriate.
